Tennis isn’t just an after school activity for University of Idaho junior Artem Kuznetsov.
It’s a lifestyle he believes saved him from a much less desired way of life.
Kuznetsov grew up in Moscow, Russia. His mom sent him to tennis practice when he was six to play for fun, but his coach insisted he move forward with his career when he got older.
Kuznetsov said if it wasn’t for the sport, he doesn’t know what he’d be doing, but it wouldn’t be good. |

Growing up in Arizona, University of Idaho freshman Kayla Mortellaro spent spring break attending the same Ladies Professional Golf Association tour event each year. She dreamed of the day she would play beside LPGA tour star, Annika Sorenstam.
Mortellaro, a public relations major, began playing golf when she was 5 years old. Since that day, she said it has all fallen into place.
“My dad got me into it,” she said. “He thought it was good for school and competition. I was raised down the street from a golf course actually, and so I just ended up doing good at it and really liked it.”
She attributes all her golf skills to her dad. |

When Amanda Morrow stepped onto the diving board for the first time this fall, it was not only as a college athlete but as a competitive diver.
Morrow said the opportunity fell into her lap.
“I always had that in the back of my mind—it would be really cool to do gymnastics somewhere,” she said. “Then this happened…I was kind of star struck for a while. It took a long time to set in.”
Morrow was a competitive gymnast for 14 years. She was a member of Northwest Gymnastics Academy in Spokane, and said she had little time for other interests.
When Morrow started gymnastics at about five years old, her mom thought she should be a dancer. Morrow disagreed. |
